About ITC
Established in 1974, the Independent Theatre Council (ITC) now has over 600 members across the UK.
ITC represents a wide range of performing arts organisations, venues and individuals in the fields of drama, dance, opera, music theatre, puppetry, mixed media, mime, physical theatre, street arts and circus.
These organisations predominantly work on the middle and small scale around the UK. Some reach audiences that have never experienced the live arts before, some work in specific communities or in social inclusion. Many work in non-traditional performance spaces; and many are award winning and internationally acclaimed.
ITC members are united by their commitment to producing innovative, contemporary work.
ITC's statement of purpose is:
"good art thrives on good management"
ITC works for professional arts organisations by providing management and legal advice, contractual negotiation and conciliation services, networking, advocacy, information exchange and training & personal development services.
ITC is run on behalf of the membership by its Board of Directors through its paid staff. The Board, which is drawn from the membership, meets at least four times a year and has a Board / Staff retreat once a year. The Board's focus is on policy and ensuring that the needs of the membership are being met.
ITC employs 10 staff members. Broadly speaking staff skills reflect the range of services on offer to the membership. These services are:
- Management Advice
- Training and professional development
- Legal Support
- Lobbying and representation
- Industrial Relations
- Networking and Information exchange
