The Company

Barbican Theatre, Plymouth is an NPO & a regional centre of excellence for young and emerging creatives. It’s been a community catalyst and cultural hub at the heart of the historic Barbican, Plymouth for 40 years.

Our passion is building Plymouth’s Creative Voice: Giving it a platform. We want the world to meet the next generation of creative leaders that we get to work with every day and through our support help them build sustainable creative careers.

We specialise in co-creation and are a commissioning house that occupies a key role in the cultural life of the city investing in the Plymouth ecology. We work extensively with our partners across the city and have been identified as cultural producers for the city.

Workforce

We support all of our team, practitioners and commissioned artists with training, Mental Health First Aid support and co-creation, first aid and access to our Employee Support Programme. All practitioners and staff are DBS  checked and safe guarding trained. Our ReBels Practitioners (including ReBels Music) are currently 66% female, 16% from LGBTQI+ community, 24% from dispora backgrounds, 16% with disability. We have a higher than Plymouth diversity representation in our commissioned artists and freelance practitioners. The Barbican is a disability and LGBTQI+ led  organisation. This is very representative of our community: 80% of Barbican’s U25 community are from protected  characteristic communities.

The Barbican works extensively in the Stonehouse and Coxside areas, which are both wards in the top 3% UK wide for social-economic deprivation.
