April 2020 - Government Business Support practicalities

Job Retention Scheme:

· To access the system on GOV.UK you will need to have a Government Gateway ID and password and an active PAYE enrolment. If you do not have these, you can register for them at HMRC services: register and PAYE Online for employers.

· Applications need to be completed in one session and will time out after 30 minutes of inactivity. · The claims portal includes a calculator to help with claims.

· There will be no e-mail confirmation so take a screenshot/print the confirmation and make sure you retain calculation information in case HMRC needs to review it in future.

· Payments are expected to be made within 6 working days.

Self-Employment Income Support Scheme: Accountants Deloitte have produced a calculator to help applicants to this scheme find out how much support they may be able to access.

Financial support for businesses: There is an interactive tool on gov.uk to help businesses identify the various forms of financial support that may be available to them during the CoVid19 crisis.

Training whilst on furlough: Government advice is that not only can furloughed employees undertake training, they should actively be encouraged to do so (so long as this activity does not provide services to, or generate revenue for their organisation). There are free online training resources available from the Department of Education, teaching numeracy, coding and internet skills. If you any workers’ furlough payments are below the national minimum wage you will need to top this up to at least the appropriate national minimum wage to cover training hours.
