Finance Explained

This course will demystify the fundamental accounting concepts and terminology that underpin financial reporting, enabling managers, board members and other roles without formal financial qualifications to fulfill their responsibilities with confidence.

By the end of the course participants will understand:

  • Financial terminology and how to use it with confidence
  • The financial duties and responsibilities of your company
  • How a budget relates to the business plan and how progress against the budget is reflected in management accounts
  • What information needs to be presented in management and year-end statutory accounts
  • Why balance sheets and cash flow matter

Target Audience

This course is intended to benefit those who do not have formal financial qualifications/training. Delivered using simple language, it will give attendees a better understanding of financial terminology and reports, inc: Management Accounts, Annual Accounts, Trustees/Directors' Report, Statement of Financial Activities, Balance Sheet and Cash-flow. Great for those in either a first-hand finance role or not, i.e board members and senior managers. This course would also be useful for administrators and general managers that minute board meetings.


The course is an informal mix of the trainer’s presentation and exercises. It includes a mini master class looking at real life examples of management accounts. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and draw on their own experiences. Course notes and reference materials are provided.


Jeremy Smeeth is Director of Finance and Resources at Mountview Academy, (previously Finance Director at Southbank Centre and Artsadmin).. He trained as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in London and began working in performing arts financial management in 1997. From 2008 to 2012 he was Director of Finance and Administration at National Theatre of Scotland. Previously he was Finance Director at Artsadmin and Finance Manager for Shared Experience, Company of Angels, International Workshop Festival, Chickenshed and the Orange Tree Theatre.
